French Postal Code Format

Postal codes were introduced in France in 1972. The French postal code consists of five digits. The first two digits of the postal code indicate the number of the department in metropolitan France. The last three digits identify the commune. Some communes are so small that they share the same code with one or more others.

A regular postcode always ends with a 0. For large cities with counties (Paris, Lyon and Marseille), the last two digits of the postal code indicate the county. Postcodes not ending with a 0 may indicate a special code, known as CEDEX, or newest postcodes.
